A Look at Clean Sweep from the New Interactive DVD, Let It Rip
Clean Sweep, one of nine selections from the recent DVD Let It Rip from Tapspace Publications, features the solo virtuosity of champion snare drummer Danny Raymond.
The material on this multi-function disc features performances of all nine solos (ranging from beginner to extremely advanced), tips and tricks instruction, commentary tracks for solos, descriptions of the five different snare drums used, multi angle sample exercises, and interview footage. The DVD also functions as a DVD –ROM including detailed transcriptions, exercises and descriptions of each solo, as well as a cover page and notation key.
"I like to refer to this DVD as a 21st century book. Not only can you pop this into a computer and watch and learn as the author performs his work, you can also refer to all the written material and printout what you need. You then have all the little extras like information about the drums themselves, commentary tracks, visual instruction, etc. Total interaction and a very accessible product on one single disc!
"The process of putting the material together started last October when I flew to California to meet up with Murray Gusseck (Tapspace Publications) and Larry Houser (Lakeridge Productions) and the film and lighting crew of about seven people. All video footage was shot in one day, basically from 9AM to 9PM. Have you ever heard the phrase preparation is key? Well let me tell you, that was certainly the case here! Knowing my parts inside and out allowed me to have the kind of performance necessary to complete it in one long session. I was even fortunate enough to get a few in one take – I’m sure which was appreciated by the crew as the day wore on."
"Clean Sweep is a rudimental solo played with brushes with the intent of exploring the different sounds of snare drums. Some examples of this would be the "rim rolls" and "swishing" the brush across the drumhead. The visual and sound variations, coupled with the endurance required to perform this piece definitely make this a challenging solo.
"The inspiration for Clean Sweep came from working with middle school students on their solo and ensemble pieces in practice rooms the size of a broom closet. Many times they would perform on a drum, and the sound level would get very loud. Half jokingly, I thought, 'Man, wouldn’t it be nice if someone did a solo using brushes.' Truly, inspiration can come from anything at anytime, anywhere.
