Every year, Modern Drummer Magazine asks their readers to nominate and then vote for their favorite drummers. This year, there were twenty-two categories including everything from rock drumming to educational DVD’s and five of the world’s finest drummers were nominated within each category.

Throughout the week of October 13-17, Pro-Mark Artist Liberty DeVitto will be in residence on the campus of Marshall University in Huntington, WV. DeVitto was selected to be a Joan C. Edwards Distinguished Professor of the Arts by Donald Van Horn, Dean of the Marshall University College of Fine Arts.

Mr. Tatsuo (Tat) Kosaka, an important figure in the history of Houston-based Pro-Mark Corporation, died at his home in Kobe, Japan on September 25, 2008 at the age of 80 following a long battle with cancer.

On Saturday, October 4th, the Fabulous Louisville Leopards (led by Pro-Mark educator, Diane Downs) will be playing at the Duke Ellington Jazz Festival in Washington DC. Their performance will take place on the Jazz 'n Families Fun Day on the National Mall at the Sylvan Amphitheater at 12pm.

Longtime Pro-Mark endorser, Buddy Harman, died recently. He was 79 years old and suffered from congestive heart failure. Buddy literally ‘wrote the book’ on country drumming. He was the first drummer ever to appear on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry and, by his own estimation, played on some 18,000 tracks. Those include such legendary songs as “Pretty Woman, by Roy Orbison, “Crazy” by Patsy Cline, “Cathy’s Clown” by The Everly Brothers. He also played drums on the soundtrack of every movie Elvis Presley ever made.

Methods and Mechanics is filled with practical career tips that will help you navigate through the music business as well as mental aspects and cerebral approaches to the art of playing music on the drums.

This July, Pro-Mark artist Jon Metzger released the 2nd edition of his ground breaking improvisation book "The Art and Language of Jazz Vibes." New features include a 52-track play-along, practice CD, 19 new pages of discography (organized by chapter and matched to specific "tunes to know"), and additional exercises spelled in all keys. Jon also prepared Bb, Eb, and bass clef transpositions of all the exercises in the book for classroom use by all instrumentalists--not just vibes players!

Sean Vega is a percussion staff member of The Concord Blue Devils, Program Coordinator and Battery Arranger for the WGI Independent World Class Champion Riverside Community College (RCC), and accomplished arranger, composer and choreographer.

Focus Artist: Brandon Barnes - RISE AGAINST

Colorado-native Brandon Barnes, formerly of Denver punk band Pinhead Circus, now calls the windy-city Chicago and the band, Rise Against, home. Brandon, who studied music in college and played in the school’s jazz band and took private lessons, knew then he wanted to make music his career and way of life. By listening to famous drummers such as Elvin Jones, Tony Williams, Terry Bozzio, Peter Erskin, Dave Lombardo, Neil Pert, Stewart Copeland, and Josh Freese, Brandon developed the style of playing he has used in various bands over the past 10 years, as well as currently with Rise Against. Born and raised outside of Pittsburgh, PA., Ray started playing drums at age seven and played along to records and the radio for years until joining the high school jazz, concert and marching bands. What is your current project?
My main gig has been with Styx for just about the past ten years. We've been out on the road pretty hard for the last five and a half years. The new record "Big Bang Theory" comes out in May and it's a record of covers. I have to say that it really surpassed any expectation that I had – it's really smokin'. We had a hit with the live version of "I Am the Walrus" and the folks at Universal encouraged a whole CD, so that's what we did. I try to keep busy doing other projects and sessions. I did most of the tracks on jazz saxophonist Steve Cole's new CD that's out in April. We just did drum tracks for my wife's (Taylor Mills) last week. I had a big thrill appearing on Brian Wilson's record from last June and I got to be on tracks with Paul McCartney, Elton John and Eric Clapton. That was a buzz! Read More
